October is an entrancing month in Montreal. When our whimsical, already fairy tale-like city is juxtaposed with the eerie ambiance of Halloween, a frighteningly fantastic stage is set to beguile thrill-seekers. Join us for these convivial autumn events, taking place right here in Laval:

Halloween Haunted House, until October 26th- A mere $2 will allow you to test your tenacity as you endure a kaleidoscopic onslaught of goblins, ghosts & ghouls. This attraction will be held weekends at the Chalet North Nature Center, and is open to any brave souls of all age groups.

Haunted Woods, Oct.18-There are no better rushes to the head than those evoked by sugar and adrenalin. Get a double dosage at the Rang de l’Equerre (at the end of Le Corbusier Blvd. North) between 5 and 6:30pm, as you forage for sweet Halloween treats, which you can hopefully get to before the blood thirsty zombies get to you! The event hosts highly recommend that you bring a flashlight, and that the nature of the costumes may be overwhelming to little trick-or-treaters!

Diapason Independent Music Festival, Oct. 16-18th-There is an immense abundance of musical talent out there, though unfortunately sometimes the difference in what remains underground and what reaches our ears is the achievement of mainstream notoriety. Which is why this festival is so innovative in nature, as it couples new and emerging artists with those already entrenched in the scene, offering a glimpse into the developmental nature of music. Tickets range from $15-30 depending on the show and venue, and this concert series will undoubtedly breathe new life into any preconceived notions of musical expression you may have had.

Halloween is a time when otherwise dormant spirits and ghouls are awoken to walk the streets amongst us, and at the Best Western Laval we are glad to offer you not only a safe, but luxurious, port in the storm! Book with us today for an unforgettable fall experience in Laval.

With the frigid weather currently sweeping through the Laval-Montreal area, most people are spending their days indoors. But, despite the cold, there are still plenty of fun outdoor activities and events happening around town. Here are a few suggestions for how to make the most of winter in Laval:

Head to the only open-air refrigerated ice rink in Laval for a wonderful experience that skaters of all levels will enjoy—especially those who are visiting from climates where outdoor rinks are rare. The Centropolis Ice Rink is open daily from 9am to 11pm. A variety of on-ice activities are offered every Saturday from 1pm to 5pm, through March 8th.  Kids especially will love these events, which include visits from costumed characters.

The prized cider produced by Domaine Lafrance Cuvée Spéciale is made from frozen apples picked right here in Laval. During this special event, visitors can help pick apples for the next batch and partake in fun activities like cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and more. Food and hot beverages will be available at the outdoor café. There will all be a special ice bar serving hot spicy apple juice, hot cider and apple taffy.

Give your young ones an introduction to the art of ice fishing. With the help of a guide, they will learn the basics of ice fishing technique and the varieties of fish that are available in different regions. It’s both educational and fun! Admission is $10 per child and $5 per accompanying adult. It is open to kids aged 8 to 14. Reservations can be made by calling 450 622-1020 ext. 227.

Wine lovers will want to make their way to the Laval Cosmodôme on November 15th, 16th and 17th for the 2013 Laval Wine Show.

It’s being billed as “the best interior wine show in Quebec,” and with a unique mix of tastings, showcases and art exhibitions, it’s certainly one of the most distinctive. It’s also the second largest wine show in the province, with more than 100 exhibitors.

Guests can expect to sample a wide variety of fantastic wine, attend seminars from leading wine experts, learn about wine connoisseurship and browse thought-provoking works from local artists.

Prints, drawings, sculptures and installations, all related to wine, will adorn the stylish interior of the Cosmodôme for this one-of-a-kind event, which spans across the venue’s 2 levels and 3 halls. A total of 8000 visitors are expected, including 500 industry professionals.

Although some of the event’s tastings are reserved for sommeliers and industry professionals, most are open to the public. Space is limited for some private room tastings, however, so it’s recommended to book your seat in advance.

A 3-day pass to the event is just $17, which includes a tasting glass and 3 tasting coupons—quite a bargain! Additional tasting coupons can be purchased at the event for $1.25. The number of coupons required for each tasting varies depending on the exhibitor.

The show is also expected to offer “Salon & Restro” packages that bundle show admission with a meal at a local restaurant and limousine transportation from the show to the restaurant. Check their website for the latest information on packages.
